Public Awareness

Challenge:

A lack of knowledge and awareness regarding the potential for technology to benefit student learning and achievement can contribute to periodic resistance by parents, businesses, community leaders and even school personnel to the funding, implementation and expansion of the districts instructional technology programs.

Recommendation:

The Wexford-Missaukee ISD must engage in a rigorous public awareness campaign to expand support for technology-rich learning environments by creating opportunities that promote awareness of, and increase knowledge about, educational technologies currently being used or to be used by students within the District.

Rationale and Implementation:

School technology programs require widespread understanding and support within the community.  The purchase and operation of the computers, video cameras and monitors, VCRs and other electronic learning tools and associated software, plus the establishment of local and wide area networks and telecommunications links to distance learning resources, demand substantial investment.  Educators cannot afford to allow community members to mistakenly conclude that these technologies do not benefit students learning.  A basic understanding of the positive value of technology in our educational programs should be sought.  The Wexford-Missaukee ISD needs to stage awareness campaigns and host related activates.  Methods of showcasing the value of technology in the learning environment include technology fairs, vendor demonstrations, plus classroom visits by parents and community members.  These activities will contribute to understanding the significance of technology-assisted learning related to student achievement.

Resources:

Additional funding is not required to implement this recommendation, but a periodic commitment of staff time to organize and conduct technology awareness activities is necessary for the District to launch a successful campaign.  The dissemination of information electronically also need to by incorporated in a plan of action.

Success:

An initial measurement of success for this recommendation is the amount of parent and community participation in promoted events.  The degree of utilization of technology resources made available for parents and the community to access directly would be another indicator.  An indirect measurement is the support given by voters to local funding initiative that involve a technology component.
