Reading First

Reading First, a part of the Federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, states that all children will learn to read successfully by the end of third grade, and emphasizes that 95%-98% of all children can learn to read. A primary goal of Reading First is to provide teachers with the knowledge of the 5 essential components of reading instruction.

  • Comprehension
  • Phonemic Awareness
  • Phonics
  • Writing
  • Vocabulary

Michigan's Reading First Grant used the L.E.T.R.S. (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) Professional Development Program as their first phase in educating teachers about the 5 essential components of reading instruction.
